Cleveland Innerbelt Bridge Project Proceeds with New Funding

Cleveland Ohio Car AccidentsAn important traffic event is coming up for local residents and others driving through the City of Cleveland who have been awaiting the completion of the second Innerbelt Bridge.  The end of the construction is in sight on this phase of the reconstruction.

The Innerbelt project was facing a budget shortfall until recently when an innovative funding plan was approved by the Ohio legislature which allowed the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) to continue the bridge project.  ODOT will use a P3 or public private partnership program to continue construction.

The P3 allows contractors to finance the more than $300 million needed to demolish the existing bridge and to design and construct the new eastbound bridge when the westbound bridge is complete.  The P3 allows the state of Ohio to pay back the contractor over time.

ODOT is currently reviewing projects throughout the state and plans to expedite others that could be P3 candidates.  Ohio became the 30th state to use this type of funding.

Both the eastbound and westbound bridges could carry traffic by 2016, transportation experts contend..

The bridge was recently named seventh nationally in a list of the “Top 10 Bridges” in America by Roads & Bridges magazine and was featured on the November 2012 cover of the publication.   The “Top 10” bridges is an annual listing compiled by the magazine.  The Innerbelt Bridge project was cited in three areas—for its deep pile foundations; for the massive excavation of soil accomplished in the Tremont Bluff area of the city; and for the drilled shafts used for the piers, according to the magazine.

The design/build partners on the Innerbelt Bridge project were also involved with 5 of the 10 projects the magazine had listed in the “Top 10.”  The latest news about the bridge can be found at
