Cleveland’s Most Dangerous Intersections for Car Accidents

Auto Accidents

Cleveland Ohio Car AccidentsIn 2011, there were more than a quarter million car accidents in the state of Ohio—292,163 according to the Ohio Department of Safety. In those crashes, 72,305 drivers or their passengers suffered injuries—that’s more than 260.7 people every day or someone injured every five minutes. In that year, 941 persons became traffic fatalities on Ohio’s roadways.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is focusing on reducing the number of intersection crashes in the greater Cleveland, Ohio area. It has named the intersection of South Carnegie Avenue and Ontario Street in downtown Cleveland as the most dangerous intersection in the city. Between 2008 and 2010, 153 crashes occurred at the site and nearly one third resulted in injuries.

According to ODOT, nearly 40% of all crashes at busy intersections result in injuries, particularly for drivers between the ages of 15 and 25. Driver mistakes are the cause of the majority of the crashes.
Cleveland’s intersection at Woodland Avenue, East 55th Street and Kinsman Road was the most dangerous junction in the five-county Cuyahoga, Geauga, Medina, Lake, and Lorain counties in a 2007-2009 study. There were a total of 161 crashes in the area in the years studied–about one a week.

Of the 13,174 automobile crashes in Cleveland in 2009, there were 3,636 injury-related accidents and 31 fatalities. That year Cleveland intersections made up eight of the top 10 high-crash intersections in a study by the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA).

In past studies, Cleveland and Cuyahoga County suburbs dominated NOCOA’s Top 100 worst intersections with 81 total accidents in the two areas—46 in the city and 35 in the suburbs.

Several other intersections showed more than 100 crashes in the period studied, including the East 55th-Kinsman-Woodland site. Also cited were:

• The intersection of Ontario Street, Carnegie Avenue and the Central Viaduct (148 car crashes)
• Harvard Avenue and Lee Road (105 crashes)
• The nexus of Chagrin Boulevard, Warrensville Center Road, Northfield Road and Van Aken Boulevard in Shaker Heights (160 crashes)

If you believe that you may have been injured in a car accident, ask at the scene to be transported to the emergency room. Give medical personnel the necessary information, but let them diagnose the severity of your injuries.

The services of an experienced Cleveland, Ohio area car accident attorney may also be required to prove to another driver’s insurance that its policyholder caused the auto accident. An auto accident attorney can assess the basis for your recovery and probable damages stemming from your car accident injury claim. The auto accident lawyers at Slater & Zurz LLP would like to help you with your claim. They have offices in Cleveland at 1392 SOM Center Rd., Mayfield Heights.

You can call them at 1-888-534-4850 or contact them through their FREE CASE REVIEW section at the top of their website page. The website address is www.slaterzurz.com.

To prove that the other driver is at fault, you will have to show the traffic laws in the accident scenario, that the other driver disobeyed these laws and that the latter driver’s action or actions (and in some cases, inaction) caused the accident and caused harm to you and/or damage to your vehicle.

It takes time, expertise and knowledge of the law to prove your case against the other driver. Therefore it is important to act promptly to report a collision to the police, to seek emergency services and/or legal services and to notify all applicable insurance carriers.

Remember do not respond to questions from the opposing party’s insurance carrier. It could come back to haunt you at the settlement table or on the witness stand.
