Ohio Dog Bite Book and Ohio Nursing Home Abuse BookVisitors to the Akron-Summit County Public Library have some new resources to consult if they wish to learn more about dog bite law in Ohio or need help with their loved ones facing possible nursing home abuse issues.

The local law firm of Slater & Zurz LLP, located in downtown Akron’s 1 Cascade Plaza, has donated two books on these topics to the library, written by the firm’s attorneys. In business for more than 40 years in the area, Slater & Zurz LLP has represented numerous dog bite clients, nursing home residents and many other persons.

The book, When a Dog Bites Fight Back, features 11 brief chapters detailing what one needs to know, what one needs to do and what one should not do in a dog bite or potential dog bite situation.  Ohio residents can learn the specific rights Ohio law provides them against the owners, harborers and keepers of dogs, what one should do when bitten, and when one should consider legal action.

Several dog bite facts are shared including that half the bite victims are children between the ages of 5 and 9 and that the average hospital stay for a dog bite victim costs more than $18,000.  The legal definition in Ohio of a “dangerous” and a “vicious” dog are explained and many preventative tactics for dealing with aggressive dogs are given.

STOP Nursing Home Abuse in Ohio  is the second book contributed to the library by the law firm and is a highly informative piece on the many facets of elder and nursing home abuse.  It discusses a magnitude of topics from falls to feeding tubes to misuse and overuse of drugs and medications and tells those concerned about quality nursing care what to look for and what to do when they see something suspect.

Readers will learn how to find the websites that evaluate and compare nursing homes, where to lodge complaints, and how to assess what kind of payment coverage each home has and how Medicaid, Medicare, and Medigap and other programs differ.

Further chapters are devoted to how to evaluate broken bones and fractures in a nursing home patient, how to spot malnutrition and dehydration (responsible for 13,980 nursing home deaths from 1999 to 2002), and many more topics highlighting various types of abuse and neglect and related material.

Library patrons can read the books while visiting the library or take them home for further study.
