Being Rear-Ended in an Auto Accident Can Lead to a Variety of Injuries

Auto Accidents

rear ended in auto accidentSometimes it is too late when you discover the car driving behind you is not going to stop.   Even if you realize it, there is a good chance you may not be able to get your vehicle out of the way or off the road.  You are about to become the victim of a rear end accident, a jarring auto accident injury that can seriously injure or even kill drivers or passengers in your vehicle or in the car behind you.

Having your vehicle rear-ended generally takes a serious toll on your body.  Of course, it is very important how fast each driver was traveling at the time of the car crash, but even if you are not moving at all, your vehicle and you will absorb the impact of the crash.

Your head, neck and spine can sustain broken bones, damage to joints, discs, ligaments, nerves and muscle injuries due to the force of the accident.   Whiplash injury is an injury frequently associated with rear-end crashes. It is sometimes referred to as cervical neck strain or sprain.

Whiplash injures the soft tissues of the neck and limits neck and head movement.  It is most often temporary, but can be permanent, in which case it will require medication and visits to the physical therapist or chiropractor.

Auto accident injuries in rear-end collisions can also be caused by seat belts restraining a driver or passenger in their seat, ostensibly to protect them from injury.  Seat belts can cause bruising and fracture or break bones such as the collar bone, the ribs, or the pelvic bone.  Surgery may be required depending on whether the bone is broken and where it is broken.

Rear-end auto accident injuries can also include concussions which occur when the skull impacts something or when there is a sudden deceleration—the head is in motion and suddenly stops.  Like whiplash, it can be a serious concern—it is in fact a brain injury—and symptoms may not immediately appear at the scene of the accident.

Injury to the joints and ligaments of the jaw, the temporalmandular joint (TMJ) affects the movement of the jaw and a person’s ability to chew and speak.  Discs in the neck and spine may rupture, bulge or slip during a rear-end crash and lead to surgery.  Sometimes these common car accident injuries are not diagnosed until months after the incident.

Usually, liability for a rear-end wreck winds up with the person who rear-ended the vehicle in front of him.  It is assumed that if that driver had left enough distance between his vehicle and the one in front of him, the accident would not have happened.
