Denture Cream Adhesive Zinc Poisoning is Still an Issue

Denture Cream Lawsuit

denture cream law suit The possible health hazard of using denture cream adhesive is far from old news.  Although the adverse effects of some brands initially brought them into prominence in lawsuits back in 2009, and scientific research on the effects of zinc in denture cream began even earlier, victims are still filing suits.

The denture cream lawsuits claim heavy use of the zinc-based product causes zinc poisoning which results in neurological damage and other physical ailments.

A West Virginia woman filed a mass product liability claim in mid-May contending she started using Fixodent in 1990 and it caused her to experience paralysis and other injuries.  Her claim was filed in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.

Fixodent is made by Proctor and Gamble.  Another dental adhesive product to come under fire, is Poligrip, made by Glaxo/Smith/Kline.  In past years, Poligrip acknowledged having more zinc content than Fixodent, but the company brought out a zinc-free version in 2010.

Manufacturers do not have to expose the amount of zinc in their products and until recent years consumers were not aware that ingesting zinc, even in small amounts, if exposure was extended, could be dangerous.

In 2011, The University of Maryland performed an in-depth study of excessive use of zinc-based denture cream and confirmed the cream may cause neurological damage and other problems.  The same year the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an advisory that use of zinc-based denture cream can cause irreversible damage.

Various plaintiffs in the denture cream lawsuits have reported neuropathy or numbness or tingling in the feet, legs, hands or arms. They have also noticed one or more of the following:  a lessening of strength in the limbs, pain in the extremities or an inability to move at all, stumbling, falling, lack of balance, or a change in gait.

Although zinc is beneficial in the body for wound healing and can prevent diarrhea, an extended period of heavy use can cause any of the serious side effects mentioned above.  In addition, if there is too much zinc in the body, the level of copper is probably low and copper is needed for increased energy, for growth, as an anti-inflammatory agent, and for brain stem function among other things.
