Insurance Company Pay-Outs for Ohio Dog Bite Claims

Dog Bites

Ohio Dog Bite ClaimsPets are popular in the United States. There are several reasons to adopt or purchase a dog, cat or other animal; whether you’re getting a friend for your children, looking for companionship or suffer from impairment and need assistance, animals play large, important roles in our homes and families.  The United States Humane Society estimates that there are approximately 78.2 million dogs owned in the US.  They also report that 39% of US households own at least one dog.

Because of the large amount of animals, a massive number of dog bites have been reported in recent years.  State Farm, one of the nation’s largest insurance companies, reported that they alone paid more than $109 million on nearly 3800 dog bite claims in 2011. They also reported that this is up from the $90 million paid on 3500 dog bite claims in 2010.  A spokesman for State Farm went on to say that “According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) there are over 4.5 million dog bite incidents with humans every year in the US. About 20% of those, over 800,000, result in the victims seeking medical attention.”

State Farm reported that Ohio ranked 4th among states for dog bite reports, with 215 dog bite claims made through State Farm, and $5.4 million paid out to victims in 2011.  Nationwide, there were about 16,000 dog bite claims made, and almost $480 million paid out by insurance providers in 2011.  Those numbers are staggering, and show a rise of nearly 16% from 2010.  Given this trend, numbers are sure to rise for 2012.

State Farm, and several other insurance companies provide safety tips to help reduce the amount of dog bite claims.  The most telling statistic is that a majority of dog bite victims are children.  It is important to monitor the interaction between children and dogs at all times.  Even though man’s best friend has previously acted well around your children, dogs can still be unpredictable.  If a child is persistently aggravating a dog, wakes it from its sleep or takes away its favorite toy, the dog may attack.
