New Exotic Animal Law in Ohio

Dog Bites

exotic animal law in OhioDomestic animals provide companionship, love and assistance to many Ohioans.  Dogs, cats and birds are typical pets, but sometimes animal owners like to broaden their horizons.  Purchasing and housing exotic animals is inherently dangerous.  Because of new laws in Ohio, they must be dealt with differently than your run-of-the-mill dog.

Because of the events that occurred last October, Ohio has enacted laws that prevent the new purchase of any exotic animal, including bears, tigers and certain snakes.  The law was brought about by the Terry Thompson incident, where he released a large quantity of exotic animals into the wild just before he committed suicide.  A vast majority of the animals had to be destroyed in order to protect the public.

Now, the new Ohio law bans ownership, sale and trade of exotic animals in the state.  If an animal of this caliber was owned prior to the law being enacted, the owner could be grandfathered in, so long as they registered the animal with the Ohio Agriculture Department.  The 60-day registration window opened up on September 5th.  If animals are not registered by the end of the period, there are fines, penalties and jail-time that accompany the charge of a 1st degree misdemeanor.
