Dog Bites

dangerous dogs in OhioIn Ohio, dangerous and vicious dogs must be registered with the auditor of the Ohio county in which the dog resides.  Dangerous and vicious dogs can only be registered to a person who actually owns the dog and is at least eighteen years old.  Before a dangerous or vicious dog can be registered, however, there are certain requirements that must be met.  These requirements are detailed in Ohio Revised Code 955.22(I) and are summarized below:

First, the owner must pay a fee of fifty dollars ($50).

Second, the dog owner must provide his or her address and phone number so that the local dog warden or county auditor may contact him or her.

Third, the dog owner must provide evidence that the dog is current on its rabies vaccination.

Also, the dog owner must provide evidence that the dog has been spayed or neutered.

The dog owner must also provide evidence that the dog owner has posted and will continue to post clearly visible signs at the dog owner’s residence warning both children and adults of the presence of a dangerous or vicious dog on the property.

Finally, the dog owner must provide evidence that the dog has been permanently identified with a microchip and the dog’s microchip number.

After the county auditor issues the dangerous or vicious dog registration certificate to the dog owner, the auditor will also provide the owner with a uniformly designed tag that identified the dog as a dangerous or vicious dog.  The dog owner must renew the certificate annually for the same fee and in the same manner as the initial certificate was obtained.
