The Force of a Dog’s Bite

Dog Bites

Bite force is the measurement of the amount of pressure in a dog’s bite. The greater the pressure a dog can exert, the greater the damage a dog’s bite can cause.  The strength of a dog’s bite varies depending on a number of factors, including breed, animal, and circumstance.  The most specific variable is the size of the dog’s head.  The larger the dog’s head, the more force its jaws can exert.  Also, trained dogs usually have a higher bite force than untrained dogs.

Recently, National Geographic conducted tests to determine the bite force of several different breeds of dogs.  For comparison, a person’s bite force averages around 120 pounds.  Of the dogs tested, the Mastiff had the strongest jaw with a bite force of around 500 pounds.  Rottweilers had the second strongest bite force at around 300 pounds of pressure.  German Shepherds and Pit Bulls rounded out the top four with each exerting around 230 pounds of pressure.

Ironically, pit bulls are often considered the most vicious breed of dog, yet they are nowhere close to having the strongest bite force.  In comparison to a person’s jaw strength, all the above dog breeds have powerful and dangerous bites.  That is why no dog should be underestimated in the amount of damage it is capable of inflicting on a victim.
