Health Hazards of Denture Creams Containing Zinc

denture cream lawsuitsIn recent years, the health risks associated with the long-term use of denture creams and denture adhesives have become apparent.

In 2009, ABC News Good Morning America reported on the link between the use of denture creams and difficulties with walking and keeping one’s balance (www.abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=7504641&page=1). Since then, news sources as varied as The New York Times, the Associated Press, and Fox News have all reported on the health hazards of denture creams containing zinc, which have included GlaxoSmithKline’s Super Polygrip and Procter & Gamble’s Fixodent.

Scientific research published since 2008 in prestigious medical journals such as Neurology (www.neurology.org/content/71/9/639.abstract) and Neurotoxicology (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19732792) has linked zinc-containing denture creams to significant neurological diseases. The Food and Drug Administration issued an advisory to denture-cream manufacturers in February 2011 (www.fda.gov/downloads/MedicalDevices/ResourcesforYou/Industry/UCM244652).

GlaxoSmithKline, after first insisting its products were safe if used as directed, voluntarily stopped manufacturing its products with zinc in 2010 after it found the science to be persuasive (New York Times 3/30/10). It now boasts that its products are “zinc-free.” It has posted questions and answers addressing the health problems associated with zinc on its website (www.mypolicare.com/Poligrip_FAQ.aspx#faqz1).

Proctor & Gamble still makes Fixodent with zinc, but notes on its webpage that “excessive and prolonged zinc intake is reported to be associated with serious health problems” (www.dentureliving.com/fixodent-denture-products/product-faq).

Symptoms associated with zinc-related health problems include numbness, tingling, pain, and a feeling of heaviness in the arms and legs, as well as overall weakness and poor balance. Some patients have been misdiagnosed as suffering from multiple sclerosis, lupus, and Guillain-Barre Syndrome (www.msrc.co.uk).
