Kidney Cancer, Testicular Cancer and the Chemical Ammonium Perflourooctanoate (C8)

teflonIf you have kidney cancer or testicular cancer, it may have been caused by a certain chemical found in some Ohio drinking water.  Or if you have experienced complications of pregnancy, including pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) or preeclampsia, the same chemical may be at fault.

An independent scientific panel recently found a probable link between kidney cancer and testicular cancer, as well as PIH and preeclampsia, and the chemical ammonium perflourooctanoate, also known as PFOA or simply C8, which is used in the manufacture of DuPont’s Teflon products.

Those products are used in non-stick cookware, water-repellant clothing, and stain-resistant carpet, among other applications.

The scientific study – the largest ever done of the potential link between cancer and this chemical – is being conducted by a panel of prominent epidemiologists from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Brown University, and Emory University.  It is part of a class action lawsuit against DuPont in Parkersburg, West Virginia, where Teflon is made.

Kidney cancer symptoms may include blood in the urine, back pain, and swelling in the legs, but the disease sometimes displays no symptoms and is only detected during medical examination.  Testicular cancer is usually detected by swelling in one of the testicles.

Testicular cancer is considered highly treatable if detected early.  Successful treatment of kidney cancer is more problematic, depending on the particular type of cancer involved and the stage at which it is diagnosed.

PIH and preeclampsia may result in low birth weight or preterm delivery, as well as more serious and even fatal health problems for the mother and fetus, including strokes and still-birth.

If you believe you or a loved one may have suffered from one of these diseases due to C8 exposure, please contact Slater & Zurz LLP for a free consultation by calling 1-800-297-9191 or send a Blog Message to schedule a time to talk.
