Family Files Wrongful Death Suit in Boating Accident

Wrongful Death

wrongful death in boating accidentA Florida family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit for the loss of their son in a speedboat accident that occurred late last year. The family claims their son died as a result of the failure of the emergency response team. The young man was a champion speedboat racer. He was racing in a Key West competition when suddenly his boat flipped, trapping him underwater. His racing partner, who was also in the boat at the time, claimed that the man’s injuries would not have been life-threatening. He said the man spent several minutes trying to free himself of restraints when he succumbed. The official cause of death is drowning. However, the family of the victim claims that the rescue crew was slow to respond, and this, not the accident itself, caused the racer’s death. They are suing Super Boat International Productions, the sponsor of the race. The young man and his racing partner had previously won a full eight national championships and three world championships. The partner indicated that the loss of life doesn’t make sense to him. The family claims no ill-will, and has therefore filed in civil, not criminal court. They claim the purpose of their lawsuit is to ensure the safety of boat racers. Whether the rescuers were negligent by responding slowly is a matter for the courts to decide. However, this incident serves to illustrate the value of securing an experienced wrongful death lawyer in the event that a loved one suffers a wrongful death. If a family member or other loved one in Ohio dies as a result of another’s negligence or fault, seek legal counsel.
