Accident Victim Dies From Brain Injury

Brain Injuries

A young woman suffered a fatal brain injury last weekend when her car crashed into an SUV. She was visiting the area, hoping to find a job.

Just after midnight on Sunday morning, the victim was driving her Mazda southbound on State Highway 83. As she entered a curve in the road she lost control, and possibly attempted to over-correct. Her Mazda slid sideways into oncoming traffic, and was hit by an SUV. The car was hit on the passenger side, but the impact was great enough to smash the passenger compartment.

The 19-year-old suffered an open skull fracture, and likely died instantly, according to the medical examiner who responded to the scene. The driver of the SUV, a 52-year-old local, was hospitalized for injuries.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. It appears that the young woman may have been driving at an excessive speed which caused her to lose control on the turn, but this is mere speculation. Until the Racine County Sheriff completes their investigation little more will be known. The driver of the SUV was not cited.

In a sad irony, the victim’s father was killed in a similar accident in 2005. He also suffered a brain injury. This is, in fact, one more tragedy in a family that has seen the loss of now four members in the past few years.

Brain-injured accident victims often die or experience permanent and severe impairments. Many victims who do survive are never able to return to jobs or continue with activities we all take for granted.
