6-Year-Old Dog Bite Victim Returns Home

Dog Bites

A six-year-old boy who was viciously attacked and injured by a Rottweiler mix returned home this week. The West Virginia child faces extensive treatment, including plastic surgery.

The attack occurred earlier this month when the boy and his mother were walking in the front door of a friend’s apartment. The dog, one of several kept at the residence, lunged at the boy, biting him on the face, ears, and leg. The Rottweiler mix then attacked and bit the mother as she tried to rescue her little son.

The injuries to the boy include bite marks on the ear, on his leg, and under his eye. The mother indicates that the boy is now terrified of dogs, and that this incident will not only necessitate plastic surgery, but has left the boy with emotional scars.

The Rottweiler has priors. In fact, according to investigating Huntington Police Officer Chris Sperry, this is the fourth such bite attack. He remarked, “That dog shouldn’t have been up there. This is the fourth bite. I want to be able to show this owner had to know this was an aggressive dog.”

The mother is pursuing legal action against the dog’s owner. Many states have a one-bite dog rule, in which a dog not deemed vicious may be allowed one offense. Ohio is not one of those states. Rather, dog owners in Ohio are responsible for their dog’s behavior from the first bite. Regardless, in any jurisdiction this dog would be considered vicious and dangerous.
