Example of Nursing Home Abuse: Abuse from Other Nursing Home Residents

When you think about nursing home abuse, you may picture nurses or other employees tormenting residents or neglecting to care for them. It’s easy to forget that nursing home abuse can come from other residents, as well.

The Des Moines Register reports that 42 convicted sex offenders in Iowa are living in elder care facilities. Although violent criminals and sex offenders need a place to live just like everyone else, housing them with other residents who may be unable to physically fend off an attack can lead to instances of nursing home abuse.

Last month in Pomeroy,Iowa, an eight-year-old girl saw a 95-year-old woman being sexually assaulted. The 83-year-old suspect had been convicted of four sex crimes. He had been ordered to live in the care center even though the Department of Human Services found he was likely to commit violent sexual offenses.

This is not the only recent instance of a registered sex offender sexually assaulting other residents in Iowa. There were similar incidents in Le Mars and Anamosa last year.

A state work group to analyze the problem of sex offenders living in Iowa nursing homes was created after the Pomeroy attack, but they have met for just 80 minutes, according to the Des Moines Register. The group has yet to even count all the sex offenders living in nursing homes, the Register reports.

Sexual abuse of the elderly is almost unthinkably evil, but it is a risk you should be aware of.
