Pit bull attacks in OhioThe dubious reputation of pit bulls lives on. The trial of an owner of two pit bulls has begun for an attack that left a ten-year-old girl so physically brutalized that part of her arm had to be amputated.

The defendant has been charged with two counts for each of the following:

  • Violation of the Vicious Dog Act
  • Reckless Conduct
  • Failure to Vaccinate an Animal Against Rabies.

She faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

The victim, a neighbor of the owner of the pit bulls, had just left her house to find a friend with whom to play basketball. Upon seeing the dogs were loose, she fled back toward her house, but the pit bulls raced after her, knocking her down. She managed to get back up and began to run again, at which point the dogs attacked, biting her arms and ankles.

As the girl testified about the attack in court, she showed jurors her prosthetic arm, and explained that she has had to learn how to write all over again. Such basic daily activities as carrying her lunch tray have been a challenge, and she is no longer able to play games that require use of her hands.

The defendant’s son explained he was unaware that the girl was afraid of the dogs. The victim had been at the house before, and actually petted them and rubbed their bellies. This testimony stands in stark contrast with the girl’s as she shared that she once had to jump onto a table to get away from the dogs.

Regardless of one’s opinion about pit bulls, this incident is a sad illustration of what can happen when an owner neglects to keep dogs secured. The young victim shared she often has nightmares of the attack. Her life has been diminished both physically and emotionally.
