Examples of Physical Abuse and Theft in a Nursing Home Facility

Sin City lives up to its name with reports that caregivers at a Las Vegas nursing home have been charged with abusing and stealing from elderly residents. The Las Vegas Home Sweet Home facility has been closed by the state and its license suspended.

The Nevada Bureau of Health Care and Compliance has investigated the facility numerous times over the past several years, and in many instances, it has issued fines for non-compliance with state regulations. The most recent investigation revealed that workers at the nursing home stole Social Security checks from residents and deposited them in their own accounts. In addition, caregivers took money from elderly residents for purchases and failed to return what was left over.

The investigation also found that at least one resident was physically abused. When an elderly woman became angry with staff and started shouting, she was grabbed by the ankles and dragged down the hall as she screamed and kicked. In that instance police were called to investigate, and the woman was subsequently removed to another facility.

Among the arguments cited for closing the nursing home and revoking its license was that, given a history of offenses by the staff, residents were not safe. All those who had been patients at the facility have been placed elsewhere.

While it is disheartening that individuals who accept the responsibility of caring for the elderly would engage in such activities, at least in this instance justice may be served.
