Alzheimer Patient Abused by Nursing Home Staff

Abuse of Alzheimer patients in Ohio Nursing HomesAn elderly Alzheimer patient in a Cleveland, Ohio facility was abused by a nursing home assistant. The worker has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges.

The incidents of abuse occurred at a Metro Health Medical Center facility in Cleveland. The son of the resident had become suspicious of neglect and abuse and placed a miniature hidden video recorder in the air purifier of his mother’s bedroom.

Videotape revealed repeated acts of abuse and neglect. The defendant pleaded guilty of misdemeanor assault in an apparent plea bargain by which she will serve not more than six months in county jail. A second defendant in the case pleaded guilty to numerous counts of felony neglect and abuse.

The son of the victim has revealed that two other individuals whom he saw in the video abusing his mother were released without charges. These individuals were terminated by the company. The nursing home fired the two but has not made any comments regarding this facet of the case. The son claims that these workers were not charged because of the way Ohio law is defined in such cases. He also suggested that the convicted had abused his mother more than once, but was only given one count.

The families of Alzheimer patients face a difficult road as their loved ones become increasingly diminished. Often, these patients become too difficult to manage at home. For these families to then have to worry for the safety of the patients is very sad, indeed.
