Eleven Nursing Home Employees Charged in Patient Abuse Case

A nursing home in Arlington, VA has come under investigation for continued abuse of one of its residents by eleven different caregivers in what may be one of the largest nursing home abuse cases in history.

The victim is a gentleman who resided at the facility for seven years, was subjected to neglect, assault, and forgery by employees of Potomac Center, an Arlington facility that has been in operation since 1978. The victim’s wife has filed a $10 million lawsuit against the center and 35 of its employees.

Mary Kay Evans described visiting her husband, returning 12 hours later, and finding his diaper had not been changed. He was rarely shaved, was kept filthy, and his dentures were never removed and cleaned. When food would be brought to him, none of the caregivers would assist him, in spite of the fact that he was known to be unable to feed himself. Roaches were also found on his food tray.

When the Virginia State Medicaid Fraud Office asked Mrs. Evans if she would mind FBI agents videotaping her husband’s room, she jumped at the chance. The resulting footage was shocking. On one occasion, a registered nurse held a pillow over the victim’s mouth and face. Video also showed a nurse’s aide throwing popcorn at the victim, laughing all the while as the elderly man fearfully tried to bat it away.

Two employees have already been convicted, and another eleven await trial. Potomac Center, meanwhile, has released a statement denying all allegations.
