Nursing Home Indicted for Abuse and Neglect of Mentally Ill Patient

nursing home abuse of mentally ill patientA  nursing home facility was recently indicted at a grand jury hearing for felony abuse and neglect of a mentally ill patient. The victim died as the result of alleged lack of staff training and care.

The Verdugo Valley Skilled Nursing and Wellness Centre located in the Los Angeles area faces charges for the death of a patient with a history of mental illness. The individual made repeated attempts to commit suicide during his stay at the facility. On one occasion he set off a fire extinguisher in his mouth. Another time he wheeled himself out of the facility and into the street in order to be hit by a car.

After each suicide attempt the mentally ill man was hospitalized, then later returned toVerdugoValley. He finally succeeded in his suicide attempts by again using a fire extinguisher inside his mouth. What the nursing home staff did to try to prevent him from his attempts is not clear, but the charges indicate the facility did not train employees on how to properly care for mentally ill residents.

Oddly enough, with numerous suicide attempts and hospitalizations before his final act, the victim died a mere month after he was first admitted. This suggests a high degree of volatility and lack of control on the part of the deceased man. Keeping a close eye on him, for this reason, would have seemed a logical endeavor.

If the facility receives a felony conviction it will lose its license, as well as all federal funding.
