Working Together Program for Unmarried Parents

Over 40% of children in Ohio are born to unmarried parents. Beyond the personal challenges of single parenthood, courts are developing ways for the legal system to work with unmarried parents and their children.

Domestic courts in Summit County, Ohio and Stark County, Ohio have developed a program for unmarried parents called “Working Together.” The Summit County program began in 2004, while the Stark County program began in 2009. Every unmarried parent who comes through the domestic court system will be sent into this program.

Hundreds of parents a year attend this workshop, which is usually about three hours long. The emphasis in this program will always be on the health of the children—both mental and physical.

The Working Together Program is an educational program for never married parents who share a commitment to their child and are involved in the Court process to determine visitation and/or custody issues. Working Together gives parents the opportunity to learn together their legal rights and responsibilities as parents.  The program also gives parents the opportunity to meet with a neutral professional to resolve their differences and plan together on the best way to meet the challenges ahead.

If you are unmarried, with children, and involved in the court system, you can expect to attend this program.
