Clostridium Difficile (C. Diff) Infecting Ohio Nursing Homes

Clostridium Difficile, commonly known as “C. Diff,” is a type of infection that has been gaining a lot of attention in Ohio nursing homes.  This infection cause severe damage to a nursing home patient, and can even come about as the result of treating another disease.

C. Diff is a bacterial infection that can cause diarrhea and more serious intestinal conditions, such as colitis. C. Diff bacteria can be found in the feces of an infected person, and then spread to other patients when caregivers come in contact with the feces of an infected patient and fail to wash their hands before treating another patient.

Many elderly in nursing homes and hospitals are at a heightened risk for contracting C. Diff because that they may be taking antibiotics for other diseases.  These antibiotics can weaken the body’s ability to fight off contagion, and the theory now is that C. Diff comes into an elderly person’s body and takes advantage of that weakness.

Curing one problem can simply cause another one.

When diagnosed early on, C. Diff may be treated with a course of specialized antibiotics.  But, of course, the disease has to be recognized to be treated, and those antibiotics only work properly if the infection is caught and treated early on.

Advanced cases of C. Diff may require surgery in the bowel or colon and may deadly. There are reported cases of nursing home deaths from C. Diff.
