Clear Thinking for All Types of Brain Injuries from Auto Accidents

Brain Injuries

An auto accident routinely causes brain injury. The type and severity of the brain injury can be one of many and range from mild to severe. A victim of an auto accident who has sustained a brain injury may have a brief change in their mental condition and return to normal after a period of time or they may incur very serious brain injury with a long period of unconsciousness, amnesia and permanent disabilities.

Types of brain injuries include the following:

A concussion is caused by a blow or jolt to the head and changes the way the brain normally works. Therefore, brain function has been altered in some way.

This type of brain injury occurs when the brain is bruised.

With an anoxic brain injury, the brain is deprived of oxygen.

A hypoxic brain injury is when the brain receives some but not enough oxygen

A contrecoup brain injury occurs when the brain bounces off both sides of the skull. The brain suffers bruising on both sides.

Diffuse Axonal

This type of brain injury is very common with auto accidents and is caused by violent shaking or strong rotation the head. The injury occurs because the non-moving brain lags behind the movement of the skull causing brain tissues to rip and tear.

A penetration brain injury is when a foreign object enters the brain such as a piece of glass or metal.

Brain injuries are generally classified into one of the following three categories:

Mild Brain Injuries occur when the loss of consciousness is very brief (seconds or minutes). Loss of consciousness may not even occur at all. A person may just be dazed or confused. Nevertheless, there is a change in mental status.

Moderate Brain Injuries occur when there is a loss of consciousness that lasts from minutes to a few hours and confusion spans over days or weeks. Physical, cognitive or behavioral impairments can be temporary or permanent.

Severe Brain Injuries result from crushing blows or penetrating wounds to the head. These injuries tear, shear and rip very delicate brain tissue. Severe brain injuries are life threatening and the probability is very low that someone with this type of brain injury will return to normal.

No matter what type or category of brain injury someone has sustained during an auto accident, their (as well as their family’s) ability to think clearly and communicate effectively during these traumatic times are greatly impaired for a variety of reasons.

The auto accident event has caused an injury to the brain of the victim and it has inflicted the victim and his or her family with very high levels of stress and emotion. Under these circumstances, it’s difficult for anyone to think logically and communicate decisively at a time when rational decisions and effective communication are needed most.
