How to Protect Yourself After the Auto Accident

Auto Accidents

Its important to know what to do to protect yourself and your rights at each stage of an accident. Here are some tips on what to do after an accident:

1. Get immediate medical attention for your injuries: Whether its at an emergency room or from your own doctor, get checked as soon as possible. Any delay in obtaining medical care will cause the insurance company to question whether you were actually hurt in the accident.

2. Report all of your injuries and symptoms at the first medical visit: If you later seek compensation for an injury that was not reported at your first medical visit after the accident, the insurance company will argue that the accident was not the cause.

3. Report the accident to the “other” driver’s insurance company and to your insurance company immediately: Indicate that you are making a claim for both personal injuries and vehicle damage. The “other” driver may try to convince you not to report the accident by offering to pay for the vehicle’s damages. Do not accept such an offer.

4. Follow the treatment recommendations of the hospital or your doctor: Failure to follow their professional medical recommendations may lead the insurance company to question the severity of your injuries.

5. Keep a dairy of your medical care and recovery progress: Concise daily entries will help you recall the degree of pain you suffered, how you were limited because of the pain and the progress of recovery.

6. Take photographs of the damage to the vehicle and visible injuries: These photos can be very important in documenting a person’s injuries long after the vehicle has been repaired or salvaged and any visible injuries have healed.
