How to Protect Yourself At the Scene of an Accident

July 19, 2009

Auto Accidents

Here are some important tips if you are involved in an auto accident:

1. Call the police: Do not leave the scene before the police arrive and insist that an accident report be written. Ask for a copy of the report and the report number.

2. Get names, addresses and phone numbers of witnesses: Independent witnesses are the best bay to establish who is at fault.

3. Obtain insurance information from the other person or people:  The law requires that an insurance verification card is kept in every vehicle. Copy down all this information.

4. Report physical injuries to the police: Police accident reports normally require them to identify injuries involved in an accident.

5. Receive medical care offered by paramedics: Report all injuries and symptoms to medical care providers at the scene of the accident.
